The dress, oh my God, the dress! Finding the perfect dress is stressful, to say the least. What style? What color? What price point? The options for wedding dresses are endless. It goes without saying, wedding dress shopping will make you feel… things.
1.) I need a price check, I think someone added a couple of zeros.
Everyone knows that your wedding dress will be the most expensive and least worn dress in your closet. At the same time, everyone wants the wedding dress of their dreams. But can you have both? The answer is yes, don’t get me wrong, it’s still going to be upwards of 1K most likely. But try to keep in mind you are only going to be wearing it once (maybe twice, think trash the dress or bridal portraits) so don’t shell out more than you can afford just because you absolutely love that 10K dress you saw on Say Yes to The Dress.
There are several more affordable options (ie: BHLDN or ModCloth ), and they are growing in numbers every day. Be sure to check out your favorite online retailers, you may be surprised who is making wedding dresses these days.
2.) OMG, I need to lose 100lbs because my wedding is only two months away.
This is a tough subject for the majority of brides. The list is endless when it comes to “get thin before your wedding crash diets”. While dieting is a normal pre-wedding routine, don’t let the size of your dress ruin the way it makes you feel. Pick a dress that YOU love and that YOU feel comfortable in. Do not pick a wedding dress solely on what others think. Different opinions will vary but your opinion is the only one that really matters. You should feel nothing short of beautiful in whatever you chose to wear (no pressure, right ?) and no matter what size you are.
That being said give all wedding dress styles a fair chance. You may have gone in only wanting a strict mermaid style and found out you look awesome in a completely different style.
Remember to NEVER buy a wedding dress, or any type of clothing, based on what you’re planning to lose! Unfortunately, emotional eating is very real and sometimes we just don’t lose as much as we wanted to. Or you may even lose weight in some areas but still need that size bigger in others (think losing weight in your middle but your bust stays the same). You can always get alterations to make your dress fit like a glove, but you can’t always do the reverse.
3.) I think this is “The Dress” but I’m not crying and neither is mom.
It is a common misconception that you haven’t found “the one” until the tears are flowing from you and your entire bridal entourage. Maybe you cry, maybe you don’t, either way is okay. Sometimes we create so much hype and overly high expectations that when it comes down to it no dress is going to withstand the dream. But don’t let the lack of tears dictate the purchase of an amazing gown.
During the wedding planning process, you will find yourself in an emotional whirlwind. For example, I didn’t cry when I found my dress but I did cry randomly for no reason at all, and that’s okay. Just let it out, or keep it in, you do you.
