Intimate Backyard Wedding at a Private Residence in Miami, Florida

Chris Sosa Photography did such a lovely job capturing Roxy and Rodney's intimate backyard wedding! The couple love to host parties for their friends and family, so celebrating their wedding in their backyard made perfect sense! The couple spent weeks shopping for antique furniture and finding the perfect decor accents. Like many other couples, it started to rain on their wedding day. How did they handle the rain?

After waiting a few minutes for the rain to stop, everyone just shrugged their shoulders and danced in the rain for the rest of the night!

What were the top priorities for you in planning your wedding?
The day after we were engaged we sat down for dinner for our usual Mondate (yes, that's a thing) and started to hash out the details. We talked everything from courthouse to elopement but we really wanted our friends and family to be part of this occasion. Once we decided we were actually going to have a wedding it was no question that we would we have it at Rodney's house, well “our” home now.

We host all the time and we work very well together so planning our big day was right up our alley. We both loved the idea of being able to go into our yard and reminisce on our special day. It also allowed us plan every detail and make it ours.

What were the top priorities for you in planning your wedding?
We wanted it to reflect us (Me, my husband and his daughter #ohymus) there was pieces of us in everything we did from our favorites colors to our favorite cupcake flavors.

We wanted it to be seamless so we created our timeline with our guests and sunlight in mind (cocktail hour first, so everyone had quick bite and a drink in hand while they waited, ceremony second, right into first dance and then dinner and dancing, we also had late night bites so anyone that stuck around to dance in the rain with us got a treat.

We wanted it to be reflection of us and how we host people in our home. (which included my sangrias recipe, which I made a couple days before and my homemade sour mix for my husbands whiskey sour, the food also had every one of our favorites, queu late night bites with grilled cheese and tomato soup along with cortaditos in shot glasses)

Throughout your wedding planning did you have a moment when you were a Bummed Bride? If so, how did you overcome it?
Because we planned our wedding in 4 months and had no planner and it was in our home we had to bring everything from food, furniture, down to a porta potty (an Air Conditioned one with wheels lol)
Our biggest hurdle was the weather, we had to scramble for a tent the day before. We had put up bistro lights throughout the yard and we had to remove them for the setup of the tent and although it did save the day (thank God it was clear for the ceremony) it was not part of our original “plan”.

We didn't let it stop the fun though, we went out and danced in the rain and guests joined us, it was one of our greatest memorories of the day.

Did you do a first look? Would you recommend it to future brides?
Yes we did, since everything was at our home, we didn't want to have a lot of down time. We didn't want to have our guests waiting. Thank God we did it before because after the ceremony the rain came. It also gave us a different ease into the ceremony and believe me it doesn't take away from the emotion you feel walking down the aisle. Although we had seen each other already the tears still came at that moment.

What was your favorite part of wedding planning?
Seeing threads of our personality in everything, we included his daughter in our process and everything about our wedding was “us” it wasn't just husband and wife, it was OHMYUS!

What is your best advice to future brides?
Gotta take it easy. Go with whatever comes your way (like rain) but make sure to stand your ground to the details that you feel reflect you as a couple, even if they don't make sense to everyone else.

Our bridesmaids wore ivory like myself but each one had different color accents (shoes, bouquets, hair accessories) to represent our favorites colors, blue, green and purple. They also all had their favorite flower in their bouquet. That may sound crazy to some people but it was us.
